Do’s
Do get your ears and hearing checked by a hearing aid audiologist. A regular check will put your mind at rest and give you the opportunity to ask questions if you are experiencing changes in your hearing.
Do ask others if they are struggling in situations where you are struggling. This will let you know if it is you or the environment.
Do realise your hearing ability impacts your family, friends, co-workers and others around you — not just you.
Do ask questions and make sure that the provider is the right one for you.
Do talk to others with hearing loss. There are many national and local groups that can provide support and guidance for you.
Don’ts
Don’t ignore it and think it will get better on its own.
Don’t think you are too young for hearing loss.
Don’t stop going out and being around others because you are uncertain of your hearing.
Don’t think hearing loss only affects your hearing. Untreated hearing loss is linked to social isolation, cognitive decline and a decrease in people’s overall health.
Don’t be afraid. Hearing loss can be helped, and new technology can do so much more than your “grandparent’s” hearing aids ever did.
